Athens Underground
In front of the labyrinth
Stella Katsou, stage lighting designer
The industrial urban landscape of Athens, an absolutely natural setting, is transformed into the films of Dimitris Athanitis, giving the feeling of a perfectly constructed space.
The images follow a neo-plasticist line where the intense geometric shapes, shapes, colors -cold blue and atmospheric black n white- remodel the familiar form of the city into a landscape of different, imaginary with sharp harmony and underground beauty. The spaces are illuminated alotropically, as the familiar and the unfamiliar are almost identical.
Within this clinical and harsh environment, where the public space dominates, even in the interior, the faces show in harmony with the landscape but at the same time they look lost in its labyrinth. Their gazes search the space as if they are trying to realize where they are. The city is also hidden for them.
Hidden City (argument)
Costis Scroubelos, Plato Isaias, Phoivos Scroubelos, architects
Suddenly you are in front of an Athens that is revealed on every level, spatially, temporally, morphologically, another topography other than the familiar image and feel of this city.
In the fifteen-minute route, the Greek style of the urban landscape is built. the anarchy in the city's construction, the sense of the space that is neither general nor identifiable.
A course from the general to the non-general, where coexist the sense of the human scale, experienced variations, lost time spots, imprints you can not find again.
Through the, without any embellishment, hidden spaces of the city, the metropolitan landscape carries a sense of rigor and at the same time emotionally charged.
